Counselors

For many people seeking help for pornography addiction, a counselor is often the first person they contact for help.  There are several types of counselors that can help:

  • Psychiatrists
  • Psychologists
  • Therapists
  • Social Workers

It’s important to make sure that the counselor you seek is qualified to treat pornography/sexual addiction.  He/she must be licensed to practice, and certified in the diagnosis and treatment of sexual addiction.  Counselors are licensed by the states in which they practice.  They must have at least a master’s degree, pass a state licensing exam, and take annual continuing education courses to maintain their license.  This ensures they maintain their skills.   There are several independent organizations that certify counselor in the treatment and diagnosis of sexual addiction.  They include:

Preferred Organizations:

  • Sex Addiction Training Provider Certification Program founded by Dr. Todd Bowman.  These therapists have the designation SATP-C after their names.
  • The International Institute for Trauma and Addiction Training Program (IITAP) founded by Dr. Patrick Carnes.  These therapists have the designation CSAT after their names.

Other Organizations:

  • The American Association of Christian Counselors’ Light University Training Program.
  • The Freedom Begins Here Counselor Training Program founded by Dr. Mark Laaser.
  • The American Association for Sex Addiction Therapy Training Program (AASAT) founded by Dr. Doug Weiss.
